AF Association is a UK registered charity which focuses on raising awareness of atrial fibrillation (AF) by providing information and support for patients and medical professionals involved in detecting, diagnosing and managing AF.
AF is the most common arrhythmia (heart rhythm disorder), occurring when abnormal electrical impulses take place in the upper chambers of the heart resulting in an irregular pulse rhythm. It is estimated that 1.4 million people in the UK are affected by AF, with 500,000 more currently undiagnosed. People with AF are five times more likely to suffer an AF-related stroke which is more devastating, debilitating and disabling than any other type of stroke and are all too often fatal.
AF Association works closely with medical professionals, Department of Health, Government, NHS Trusts, strategic health authorities, patients, carers, patient support group members and allied groups.
